As promised here is the essay question I would like you to do during the half term break. Please use the A' level weblinks on this page and your hand out for evidence and references. Don't forget the sociology blog made by our very own yr 13 students. http://havablogsociology.blogspot.co.uk/
The question is as follows -
Examine the ways in which childhood can be said to be socially constructed. (24 marks)
AO1 (Knowledge and understanding) marks - 14 marks.
AO2 (interpretation, application, analysis and evaluation) - 10 marks.
Finally if you have any questions please leave a comment, I will be signing in regularly to check and respond during the break.
Good luck.

In terms of time and content which the examiners would want to see in the essay, how long should our answers be?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment. As always it's a case of quality not quantity. You must make sure that you provide a good range of different arguments from a variety of points view. Then for each argument or view evaluate how useful the arguments are in terms of answering the question asked, i.e. what are their strengths and weaknesses. Don't forget to show off, use keywords and explain what they mean to the reader imagining they know nothing about sociology. Finally don't forget to stick closely to what the question is asking and don't just write everything you know about the topic. I hope this is helpful, please leave more comments if you have any more questions.
DeleteThank you for your help so far. Which sociological theories would we have to incorporate into the essay? Also, in regards to evaluation, would we have to write about the construction of childhood having an impact on certain people in different ways?
ReplyDeleteA very good question. To answer the first part of your question I would say that the most significant theories and studies that have contributed to the sociology of childhood should be the ones to use and obviously any contribution to this area can be relevant as long as you make the appropriate links. Also make sure you use contemporary examples of issues that concern childhood that have appeared in the press. The answer to the second part of your question is, of course tackle the issue of actual impacts, but also think about research in the following way; who (sociological perspective), why (what were they trying to prove), when, how (research method). Has that given you a bit more of a clue?
